Advice on how to keep a healthy mouth
- Brush your teeth for 2 minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
- Plaque is a film of bacteria that covers your teeth, this can be removed by brushing your teeth. If the plaque is not removed it can contribute to tooth decay or even gum disease.
- Flossing and tepes should be used between your teeth to prevent buildup of plaque, not just to remove food. This can reduce bad breathe and gum disease and should be done before brushing.
- Children should be using a toothpaste that contains 1,350 to 1,500ppm fluoride. Children aged 6 and under who don’t have tooth decay can use a lower strength children’s toothpaste, but make sure it contains at least 1,000ppm fluoride. Children should be assisted in brushing their teeth until they are atleast 7 years of age.
- There are a range of toothpastes out there for adults, we advise adults use one that contains at least 1,350 parts per million (ppm) fluoride.
- Always check the toothpaste packaging to find out how much fluoride is contained.
- Avoid spitting out toothpaste or rinsing following brushing your teeth as it will wash away concentrated fluoride within the toothpaste!
- Avoid using a mouthwash straight after brushing your teeth, ideally chose a different time such as lunch time, and then avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after using the mouthwash.
- Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months, or even sooner if the bristles have frayed.
- Have regular (6 monthly) visits with you dentist and hygienist.
